Social Media Phishing

Social media has blossomed throughout the world over the last decade. What was once a small community has now become the epicenter for how people interact, argue, and get their news on a day-to-day basis. While this can be looked at as a positive, considering how many new doors social media has opened for companies and individuals everywhere, there are negatives that have slowly but surely become major issues that must be dealt with by individuals and organizations alike. One of these issues is social media phishing attacks. Now, more than ever, these online attacks threatened the security and safety of social media, and being online as a whole.

Social media phishing attacks are mostly centered around two key players: leisurely users and corporate users. With corporate users, phishing attacks have centered around Microsoft 365. As an example, a recent Microsoft 365-involved corporate logos and background images that were automatically rendered onto Microsoft 365 phishing pages.

Another trend that was discovered through extensive research involved the timing of these attempted attacks, the timing of them, and what that symbolized. The research showed that there was an uptick in phishing attacks as the week went on, which indicates that these attackers want to strategically strike when corporate users are possibly not as focused as they would have been earlier in the week. This could then lead to a slip-up or a wrong click, which would lead to a compromise of both their account and even some of the company’s assets.
